Pieter Jansen van Galen (1822 – 1913)

< BACK

   1. His childhood

Pieter Jansen van Galen became my husband’s great-great-great-grandfather. He was the son of Jan Willem Jansen van Galen (1797 – 1867) and Maria Theodora van Zadelhoff (1790 – 1841). Pieter was born on 8 February 1822 at Rozendaal, Gelderland in the United Kingdom of the Netherlands during the reign of King William I.1-3 At the age of 17 years in 1839, he witnessed the parting of the Northern and Southern Netherlands into two independent kingdoms, namely the Kingdom of the Netherlands in the north and the Kingdom of Belgium in the south. This was a drawn-out process that started with the Belgian Revolt in the Southern Netherlands from 1830 to 1831. The main reason for the revolution was the dissatisfaction with the leadership style of William I as perceived by the Dutch and French-speaking, liberal, Roman Catholic Flemings and Walloons that lived in the southern region of the united kingdom. Complete independence from both France and the northern Netherlands was their goal.4-7   2. His wife

The 19 year-old Everdina van Laar (30 November 1824, Doorwerth – 24 December 1906, Velp) who worked for others as a servant, became Pieter’s wife on 23 November 1844 at Doorwerth, Gelderland. Everdina was the daughter of Roelof van Laar and Janna Janssen van den Berg.1,2 Pieter and Everdina had 13 children.

   3. His career

He followed in his father’s footsteps and became a carpenter.2,8-22  Pieter was the fourth generation of carpenters in the Jansen van Galen family; Pieter himself, his father Jan Willem, his grandfather Peter Limperts Derck and his great-grandfather Derck.1,2

From 1840, the Netherlands finally settled into a fairly peaceful and stable politically era until the outbreak of World War I in 1914. From the 1860s, the Netherlands was also transforming into an industry-driven society under King William III, who reigned from 1849 to 1890. His daughter, 10 year-old Wilhelmina succeed him, as Queen Wilhelmina. Her rule lasted from 1890 to 1948, although her mother served as regent during the first eight years as Wilhelmina was still a minor.4,23-25  Wilhelmina was 33 years old when Pieter Jansen van Galen died.

   4. His death

The 82 year-old Everdina died at Velp, Gelderland on 24 December 1906, the day before Christmas. This must have been a rather solemn Christmas time for the family. Pieter died at the age of 91 years on 8 July 1913 at Velp.1,2,26,27

   5. His children

The first eleven children were born at Rozendaal and the last two at Velp. Of all their children, only six (one son and five daughters) matured into adulthood.8-22,26-30 One can only imagine the heartache these two parents must have experienced loosing seven children before the age of three years – four were stillborn. Although it was more common in previous centuries for children to die young compared to nowadays, this didn’t necessarily make it any easier for grieving parents.

5.1 Maria

Maria, the eldest child of Pieter and Everdina Jansen van Galen, was my husband’s great-great-grandmother. She was born on 26 August 1845 at Rozendaal.1,2,28 READ MORE on Maria Jansen van Galen and her husband, Andries Smorenburg.

5.2 Janna Everdina

Janna Everdina was born on 10 November 1846 at Rozendaal. She died at the age of two years and four months on 23 March 1849 at Rozendaal.1,2,8,29

5.3 Jan Willem

Jan was born on 3 December 1847 at Rozendaal and became a carpenter like his father. He married Antonia “Tonia” Hoendervanger (*13 January 1846, Rhenen, Utrecht) on 6 November 1872 at Arnhem. She was the daughter of Johannes Hermanus Hoendervanger and Tentje Veenedaal. Jan died at the age of 67 years on 13 February 1915 at Velp, and Antonia at 85 years on 28 February 1931 in the same village.1,2,9,10,30

The couple had nine children. They were Everdina Petronella (11 June 1873, Rheden – ?), Antonia (9 May 1875, Velp – ?), Maria Theodora (30 June 1877, Velp – 6 March 1923, Dordrecht), Pieter (20 August 1879, Velp – ?), Johannes Hermanus (18 October 1881, Velp – ?), Cornelia (18 November 1883, Velp – ?), Jan Willem (16 November 1885 – 3 September 1886, Velp), Roelofje (24 May 1888, Velp – ?) and Jan Willem (11 November 1889, Velp – 28 November 1889, Velp).1,2

5.7 Roelofje

On 5 May 1853, Pieter and Everdina’s seventh child, Roelofje was born at Rozendaal. Pieter’s birth year as 1789 (aged 64 years) on her birth record is incorrect and should be 1822 (aged 31 years). Roelfje married Pieter Hotze Ellens (ca 1866, Dieren – 28 February 1949, Velp) on 19 March 1891 at Rheden. They had three children, one daughter died at one month old. Roelofje died on 10 June 1930 at Velp.1,2,15
